Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know therapy is a good fit for me?

I believe that the therapeutic relationship is crucial to change, and it can be difficult to change without feeling safe and connected. Therefore, I offer free, 15-minute phone consultations where I can answer any questions you have about me as a therapist, for me to get a brief idea of what you are wanting to work on, and to better understand the counseling process so that we can decide whether we are a good fit. If not, I am happy to offer referrals.

How long does therapy take?

Each session is approximately 50 minutes long. For some people, a few sessions may be all they need, and for others, it may take several months or over a year. I can give you a good faith estimate on how long therapy may last depending on the issues you want to address and goals you have after intake.

How often do I need to come to therapy?

It is usually recommended that you come weekly or once every two weeks, especially at the beginning of therapy - however, this is flexible and dependent on your counseling needs and goals.

What are your rates? Do you take insurance?

My private pay rate is $150 for a 50 minute session.

I am in network with with Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Uprise (formerly known as American Behavioral Health). I am also happy to provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance company so that you can receive out of network benefits if they are available to you.

It is ultimately the client’s responsibility to ensure full payment of services, whether directly to the therapist or utilizing their insurance carriers. Please note that I am not liable for checking and relaying each individual benefit prior to the counseling appointment. You can retrieve this benefit information by calling the customer service line for mental health/behavioral health on the back of your insurance card. A credit card is required to be on file for all clients to ensure prompt payment at the time of service.

Do you offer telehealth sessions?

Yes! I provide both in-person and Telehealth sessions. Telehealth sessions are completed on a HIPAA-compliant video platform. Telehealth can be offered to anyone in the state of Alabama. However, if you choose to utilize insurance, it is important to confirm with your insurance provider that Telemedicine is covered.

How long will it take to get my first appointment?

This can change depending on my current caseload. I am happy to give you an estimate of when the next available appointment is, and also give you referrals if there is a current wait list. However, being flexible with the day and times needed for appointments will help you get an appointment more quickly.

EMDR Therapy

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) helps resolve unprocessed traumatic memories in the brain by utilizing the entire brain in the healing process. It is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. Ongoing research supports positive clinical outcomes showing EMDR therapy as a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences.

  • EMDR therapy does not require talking in detail about the distressing issue or completing homework between sessions. EMDR therapy, rather than focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors resulting from the distressing issue, allows the brain to resume its natural healing process. EMDR therapy is designed to resolve unprocessed traumatic memories in the brain. For many clients, EMDR therapy can be completed in fewer sessions than other psychotherapies.

  • Our brains have a natural way to recover from traumatic memories and events. This process involves communication between the amygdala (the alarm signal for stressful events), the hippocampus (which assists with learning, including memories about safety and danger), and the prefrontal cortex (which analyzes and controls behavior and emotion). While many times traumatic experiences can be managed and resolved spontaneously, they may not be processed without help.

Stress responses are part of our natural fight, flight, or freeze instincts. When distress from a disturbing event remains, the upsetting images, thoughts, and emotions may create an overwhelming feeling of being back in that moment, or of being “frozen in time.” EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories, and allows normal healing to resume. The experience is still remembered, but the fight, flight, or freeze response from the original event is resolved.
